When I was told that a great private museum Glenstone rested in Potomac Maryland, a suburb of Washington, DC I was a bit apprehensive. The 204,000 square foot museum built on 203,000 acres by art collectors and philanthropists Mitchell and Amy Rales is surrounded by a beautiful landscape setting. Besides the modern art, there are many paths, trails and meadows to explore. A truly zen environment to relax, learn and explore.
The by reservation only museum is a calming experience with multiple buildings to house the impressive collection of modern art. The Gallery was built in 2006 and the pavilions were recently built and added. The Pavilions are multiple modern building surrounded by nature which softens the harsh lines of the buildings.
The outdoor sculptures spread around the grounds add so much to the ambience and landscape. My favorite is the Jeff Koons split rocker sculpture which brings whimsy and fun to the serene outdoor environment.
The contemporary art changes and the current listing of artists includes one of my favorites Shirin Neshat (opening November 14), Brice Marden, Charles Ray, Cy Twombly and Ellsworth Kelly.
The trip out and prior reservation is truly worth it as Glenstone is a total experience of forging contemporary art and nature together. A serene environment to ponder and educate oneself!
