The best part of moving our corporate headquarters in Washington, DC to Georgetown is being on the waterfront and having access to the history of the neighborhood. The cobblestone streets, quint architecture, the C&O canal and all the local restaurants and shops make it unique.

Running an errand for my office I walked by Zamani Houe of Heritage located in a charming townhouse on Dumbarton Street in Georgetown. I fell for the suede shearling handmade coats embroidered with flowers made in Afghanistan.

I walked into the store to find a treasure of handmade textiles, jewelry, accessories, and these fabulous coats. I had a lengthy conversation with Feda the owner who told me that the items are made by a female cooperative in Afghanistan. He went on to advise me that since the Talban took over woman owned business like clothing stores and even hair salons closed.

This cooperative allows woman to make income to support their families. I adore buying local especially where my money can help woman in another country that are struggling because of their government’s political policies. Feda has three stores one in Georgetown, Sag Harbor in the Hamptons and in Sterling Virginia.

He went in to tell me that before fleeing Afghanistan his family was in the textile business for generations. It was wonderful to meet someone you has so much pride in his work!
