Living in Washington DC, I always wondered why the waterfront along the Anacostia River was not developed. Well, recently with the advent of the Nationals Stadium the water front has been developed with restaurants, bars, apartments and office buildings in the Navy Yards.
Saturday night I had a dinner at Whaley’s, a great seafood restaurant right on Water Street on the river. Whaley’s believes in sustainable seafood and working with local purveyors of oysters, clams and fish. The owners are 4th generation Washingtonians that believe in creating a sense of community with their dining venue.
The seafood tower is a gem with oysters, mussels, shrimp, raw fish, smoked catfish spread and seas urchin. The freshness and taste are amazing! After the tower I was full. There are small bites on the menu like the fantastic fish taco wrapped in a leaf and the crab salad or family style dishes to share.
The quality of the seafood is so fresh, and we sat inside but they have outdoor dining facing the river. A fantastic spot to dine, rest, reflect and savor the tasty fresh seafood!
