I am crazy about Xochimilco, a borough of Mexico City known for its canals and floating trajinera boats because it is truly an authentic and fun experience. You rent a trajinera boat which is usually decorated very festively and set off on the canal with a driver handling the boat.
Once you set sail, the festivities occur. You can eat, drink and have live music played for you. What transpires is that as you go down the canal you are approached by vendors on boats selling corn and all kinds of libations. The best part is the live musicians. I had a 10-piece mariachi band serenade me which was magical and unique. Where else can you float down a canal, savor corn on a cob and have a live mariachi band just sing for you.
Xochimilco captures the spirit of Mexico for me with family, friends and lovers on these floating boats enjoying the weather, ambiance food and libations. A true gathering where your only goal is to have fun and enjoy the company of those you are with.
I whole heartily recommend that anyone traveling to Mexico City visit Xochimilco and savor the unique experience!
